Windows 10 desktop icon names have shadows that won't disappear

The issue in Windows 11 where desktop icon names would become shadowed and not disappear has not been completely resolved.

After opening Task View, the icon names become shadowed and do not disappear. I have confirmed the same issue on Windows 10.

The latest updates as of now (2023/12/23) are as follows:

  • Windows 10 22H2: KB5033372 (2023/12/12)
  • Windows 11 22H2&23H2: KB5033375 (2023/12/12)

I think the problem started occurring in Windows 10 after Copilot was added with KB5032278 (2023/11/30). (I'm not sure.)

This issue occurs when the desktop icon name is shaded after opening "Task View."System PropertiesThe "Add shadows to desktop icon names" performance option no longer responds when turned on or off.

*2023/12/28: The same problem occurred when changing the theme in personalization settings.

If the "Drop shadows on desktop icon names" setting stops responding, you will need to restart Explorer or sign out to restore it.

You can restart Explorer from the Task Manager, but we recommend adding "Restart Explorer" to the taskbar as described on the next page.

It seems that the problem was caused by "Bing wallpaper", and uninstalling it will fix the problem.

This solved the problem for me. I hope it helps.

I thought this issue had already been resolved, but it seems to have recurred. Thank you for the information that the "Bing wallpaper" was the cause.
"Bing wallpaper" was not installed in my environment, but the shadow of the icon name did not disappear, so I installed "Bing wallpaper" and then uninstalled it, and the shadow of the icon name disappeared.

After testing, I found that the launch of "Bing wallpaper" triggers the layout change, and when I restart Explorer after closing "Bing wallpaper," the shadows on the icon names disappear.

Thank you for your valuable information. I will add a link to this comment in the article.
