Symptoms occurring

  • Supported OS: Windows 11 version 24H2 / 25H2
  • trigger: Update KB5070311 (Build 26100.7309 / 26200.7309),KB5072033 (After applying OS build 26200.7462 and 26100.7462)
  • Symptoms: In CAD software such as ARES Commander and certain applications, the text in menus and dialogs isThe text is displayed unintentionally in vertical text or rotated 90 degrees (sideways)..

Cause: Updated "Yu Gothic" font

After investigation, we found that the root cause of this issue was the new version of the system font "YuGothM.ttc" updated in KB5070311 and KB5072033.

Due to changes made to the font files in this update, some software is no longer able to correctly read the font's vertical/horizontal attributes, which is thought to be causing display problems.

Solution

There are currently two solutions that work:

Method A: Uninstall KB5070311 (Recommended)

The easiest and most reliable way to fix this is to remove the update that is causing the problem. KB5070311 is a "preview (optional)" update, so there is no security risk in removing it.

  1. Open "Settings" > "Windows Update" > "Update History".
  2. Click "Uninstall updates" at the bottom.
  3. Find KB5070311 in the list and click Uninstall.
  4. Restart your PC.

We do not recommend uninstalling KB5072033.

Method B: Replace with an older version of the font (advanced)

If you don't want to delete the KB due to security updates, etc., you can resolve the issue by forcing the older version of the font to load instead of using the problematic new font.

【procedure】

1.Get the old files: Before the problem occurred (before the KB was applied), the Windows 11 ISO file or the "YuGothM.ttc" is taken out.

  • To eject from another PC:
    1. Open the "C:\Windows\Fonts" folder and double-click "Yu Gothic UI" to open it.
    2. Right-click on "Yu Gothic UI Standard" and click "Copy."
    3. Paste it in a different folder.
  • To extract from a Windows 11 ISO file:
    1. How to download Windows 11 ISO filesPlease refer to the following to download the ISO file.
    2. Download and install 7-zip.https://7-zip.opensource.jp/download.html
    3. Right-click on the downloaded Windows 11 ISO file > Check for more options > 7-Zip > Click "Open."
    4. Open the "sources" folder.
    5. Double-click the largest file, "install.wim," to open it.
    6. Open the “1” folder.
    7. Once the folder is open, go to "Windows" > "Fonts."
    8. "YuGothM.ttcLeft-click on " and hold, then move it to another folder and release the click. (Drag and drop)

2.Placement: The extracted file C:\Fonts Save it in a separate folder such asC:\Windows\Fonts (You cannot overwrite the

3. Registry changes: Open the following key in Registry Editor and change the font path referenced by the system:

If you operate the registry incorrectly, it may cause problems such as the system being unable to start. Please make a backup in advance using system restore or similar, and proceed at your own risk.

To avoid panicking if your PC suddenly breaks down, it's a good idea to have a standard backup software to protect your important photos and data.

key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts

here: Yu Gothic Medium & Yu Gothic UI Regular (TrueType)

data: C:\Fonts\YuGothM.ttc (Change to the path of the folder you placed it in)

4.Reboot: Restarting your PC will load the older fonts and the display will return to normal.

ARES Commander 2026 - Normal
ARES Commander 2026 – in good condition

To undo the above settings:

  1. Change the value data back to "YuGothM.ttc".
  2. Restart your PC.

Summary

For those who use PCs for CAD or design work, font display problems can be fatal. If you are experiencing similar symptoms, first Uninstall KB5070311 Give it a try.

We recommend that you avoid applying this preview update until a new update with the fix is released by Microsoft.

I am a registered user of CorelCAD 2018 (Japanese version). My operating system is Windows 11 Pro (24H2).
After updating Windows, I was also confused by the same problem as Ares (Japanese menu: "Vertical writing" is displayed horizontally).
Following the instructions in this article, I was able to fix the problem and the Japanese menu now displays correctly. Thank you so much for your help! I appreciate the site administrator's information sharing.
Since CorelCAD's core program uses Ares modules (CAD engine), I imagine that CorelCAD also experienced this kind of problem.
While the English menu displayed correctly, the Japanese menu was displaying incorrectly, leading me to suspect a problem with the Japanese font. And it turns out I was right.
However, what remains a mystery is that although the cause of the problem is said to be the "KB5070311/KB5072033" updates, I couldn't find any record of those updates when I checked the installation history of "updates" on my computer.
Anyway, I'm glad that the Japanese menu display has been restored to normal. I would like to express my gratitude once again to the administrator.

    • CorelCAD2018 user

Thank you very much for the detailed report. I am very relieved to hear that the display has been successfully restored to normal.

As you said, CorelCAD is based on the ARES engine, so it's likely that this font issue occurred through the exact same mechanism. Your deduction that it was a Japanese font issue, given that only the Japanese menus were affected, was very accurate.

Regarding the issue of KB5070311 and KB5072033 not appearing in the update history, it is highly likely that this is related to the Windows update mechanism (cumulative updates). Because newer Windows updates include previous changes, if a newer update with a different KB number has already been applied, the older KB number may not appear in the history on its own.

In any case, I'm really glad that you can continue to use CorelCAD as before.
The fact that the same symptoms occurred in CorelCAD 2018 and could be resolved using the same procedure will be extremely useful information for other users who are experiencing similar problems with the same software.

Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for sharing this valuable information.

  • I had the same problem with the CAD software Draftsight, but thanks to this article I was able to restore it to its original display state. Thank you for sharing this useful information.
I was in contact with the manufacturer's support, and they asked me what would happen if I deleted YuGothic and switched to Meiryo, so this may be a known phenomenon in the support community.
The current iso file available from Microsoft (Win11_25H2_Japanese_x64.iso) is a YuGothM.ttc file with a timestamp of April 1, 2024, but I wonder if this will also be updated. This is troubling.

    • Thank you for your comment, Jamano.

I see you were experiencing the same issue with the CAD software Draftsight. I'm sure it's software that is directly related to your work, so I'm really glad to hear that you were able to restore the display to its original state without any issues.

The manufacturer's support suggestion to "remove Yu Gothic and switch to Meiryo" is quite bold, but on the other hand, it seems that even the support community is beginning to recognize that "Yu Gothic is the root cause."

As you say, even if the ISO file has an old (good) timestamp, once the KB is applied via Windows Update after installation, it will be overwritten with the problematic version. Until Microsoft releases a fixed version of the font, it looks like the only options are to either deal with it manually, as in this case, or to stop the update, which is a real problem.

*If you follow the method introduced in the article, even if "YuGothM.ttc" in the "C:\Windows\Fonts" folder is updated, there will be no problem because the "YuGothM.ttc" in another location (the location specified by the user) will be used.

  • I'm using ARES, but because I'm using an older version (2022), there's currently no support from the manufacturer, which was causing me some trouble. I was able to solve the problem by using the method for replacing the old font on this page. Thank you very much for your help.
When using only YuGothM, some rotations remained, so when I also specified YuGothB, YuGothL, and YuGothR, it started working normally.

    • Thank you for your comment, Toshi-sama.

I'm very happy to hear that the method in the article was helpful and that you were able to resolve the issue.

Also, thank you for the extremely valuable technical information. The fact that the issue was completely resolved by specifying all weights, not just "YuGothM" but also "B (Bold) / L (Light) / R (Regular)," is an important point that I myself had not been able to fully verify.
Thanks to your comment, many people who are also using older versions and have given up on the issue will be saved. Thank you again for sharing this wonderful information.

  • I encountered a problem with ARES Commander and found out about this through X's post. Thanks to you, I was able to understand the situation and successfully complete the repair. Thank you!

    • Thank you for your comment, Maru.

I believe this software is directly related to your work, so I was relieved to hear that the repair was completed successfully.

I'm grateful that you found me through X (formerly Twitter). Your report of the specific software name will be very helpful for others who have the same problem. Thank you.
We will continue to work hard to solve Windows problems and provide information, so please stop by if you need any further assistance.

  • I am trying to install the 2025-11 Preview Update (KB5070311) (26200.7309), but the installation has failed.
I have tried 4 times and failed. I suspect that the C drive is out of space, but I am considering repairing and reinstalling Windows.

When I run SFC/SCAN in the terminal, I get the message "Windows Resource Protection found corrupted files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are contained in the CBS log file located here:

    • Thank you for your comment. I'm relieved to hear that the SFC command returned "Successfully repaired." The integrity of the system files has now been restored.

As for KB5070311, which is failing to install, the conclusion is that I strongly recommend that you "do not try to force the installation any further, but rather pass it on for now (leave it alone)."

KB5070311 is not a required security update, but a "preview update" that includes testing elements. There is no problem if you do not install it.
This version has some issues that have been confirmed in some environments, so the installation failure may be seen as a way to avoid trouble.

Since the repair has been completed with SFC, I don't think there is any need to go through the trouble of performing a Windows repair install at this point. I think the issue will probably be fixed in a regular update, so the safest course of action is to wait patiently until then.

If you are aware of the risk of problems but still want to ensure a successful installation, it may be worth trying the following measures.

      1. Extracting the update will temporarily use a large amount of space. If you are running low on free space, try freeing up at least 20GB before trying again.

      2. Try running the Windows Update Repair Tool. This may fix the issue even if the official troubleshooting doesn't work. (This is a tool I created. Please try it if you like.) https://windows-waza.com/windows-update-advanced-repair-tool/

      3. If the above doesn't work, your last resort is to perform a "repair install (in-place upgrade)" which overwrites the entire Windows system files.
