How to open Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

1. Open from the Start button

Start buttonRight-click > Hover your mouse over "Shut down or sign out" and click "Restart" which will appear. Then, while holding down the Shift key on your keyboard, click this to open the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) when you start your PC.

2. Open from "Settings" (sure)

In rare cases, the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) may not open if you open it from the Start button, so we recommend opening it from "Settings" for more reliable access.

1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.

2. Select "System" on the left side, scroll down the items on the right side and click "Recovery".

3. Under Recovery options, click Restart now to the right of Advanced startup.

4. A confirmation screen will appear, so click "Restart now".

*If you have unsaved work, be sure to save it before clicking "Restart now."

5. When your PC starts, you will see a blue screen that says "Choose an option."

If Windows won't start

If Windows won't start, you can open the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) using one of the following methods:

  1. Immediately after turning on your PC (when the manufacturer's logo is displayed) or when it is stuck on a blue screen, press and hold the power button to force a shutdown two or three times to open the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
  2. In some environments, you can open it by pressing the F11 button on your keyboard immediately after turning on your PC.

  • Click "Command Prompt" to open the command prompt.

  • "System restore" to select a restore point and restore your system.
