Win11 KB5040527 Some applications, such as A-Tuning, cannot be launched.

KB5040527, previewed on 2024/07/25, adds new features and fixes existing issues.

However, there are some issues that prevent some applications from running.

Phased rollout

These will be rolled out gradually and may not be available to everyone.

  • [Windows Sharing in China Announcement] NEW! Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on for Nearby Sharing to work. If they're off when you turn on Nearby Sharing, Windows will prompt you for permission to turn them on.
  • Start Menu NEW! Drag apps from the pinned section of the menu to pin them to the taskbar.
  • Taskbar
    • NEW! When the taskbar has keyboard focus (WIN+T), pressing a letter will jump to the app whose name starts with that letter. Pressing a letter multiple times will jump to the next app whose name starts with that letter. Pressing a letter multiple times only works if you have multiple pinned or open apps with that name. If you're using a non-merged taskbar, pressing a letter will jump to the window whose name starts with that letter. Additionally, pressing the Home and End keys will change keyboard focus to the first and last items on the taskbar.
    • The End Task option no longer displays the Not Responding dialog before stopping a task. This option is only available if you turn on End Task in Settings > System > Developer.
  • [File Explorer]
    • NEW! Right-click on a tab and you'll now have the option to duplicate the tab.
    • A memory leak occurs when working with archive folders.
    • Browsing in File Explorer causes it to stop responding.
    • The first time you search from the home page, you may not see any results.
    • The address bar drop-down menu may appear when you least expect it.
    • Saving a file to the Gallery using the Save dialog would result in an error. With this update, the file will now be saved to the Pictures Library instead.
    • If you are in the Gallery, the search box does not show the correct folder name.
    • A blank area will appear at the top of File Explorer.
    • When you move your mouse over the "Recommended Files" section on Home, the back and forward mouse buttons do not work.
    • When I view images in the gallery, they flash.
  • [Desktop Icons] The spacing between icons can become very large.

We have previously covered the issue of "The address bar drop-down menu may appear unexpectedly."

Bug in Win11 Explorer: Folder address pops up and doesn't disappear

Currently, the issue has not been fixed in my environment even after installing KB5040527.

It's being rolled out in stages, so I think it will be fixed eventually.

Currently, some users are experiencing an issue where they are unable to run ASRock Motherboard Utility (hereafter referred to as A-Tuning) after installing KB5040527.

*The latest version of ASRock Motherboard Utility that is experiencing the problem is 3.0.499 (March 21, 2024).

KB5040527 appears to have quietly updated the list of vulnerable drivers, and now detects AsrDrv107.sys, a driver required for A-Tuning, as a vulnerable driver and prevents it from loading.

This issue only occurs when Memory Integrity is enabled. If you disable Memory Integrity and restart your PC, the AsrDrv107.sys driver will be able to load and A-Tuning will be able to run.

However, disabling memory integrity weakens security.

Please refer to the next page for more details on how to disable it.

What is Memory Integrity in Windows 10/11? Is it okay to turn it off?

Personally, I recommend not using it until the latest version of applications such as A-Tuning is released.

When Microsoft updates its list of vulnerable drivers, it means that the drivers on the list contain some kind of vulnerability that could allow a malicious attacker to take over your system.

If A-Tuning does not work even after disabling Memory Integrity

If A-Tuning still doesn't work after disabling Memory Integrity and rebooting,

1. Open "Device Security" in Windows Security and turn off "Microsoft Vulnerable Driver Blocklist" under the Memory Integrity settings.

Please note that setting "Microsoft Vulnerable Driver Blocklist" to "Off" will allow any driver to load.

3. Restart your PC.

Once your PC boots, the driver AsrDrv107.sys will load and A-Tuning will be able to run.

As mentioned above, I personally recommend not using applications such as A-Tuning until the latest versions are released.
