Currently, in multiple environments, it appears that explorer.exe errors are occurring after installing the preview update KB5034204 (OS builds 22621.3085 and 22631.3085) released on January 13, 2024.
A few days ago, we received an inquiry from a user who said that an error message "Memory could not be written" was appearing when shutting down or restarting the device. We decided to check this out.
Inquiries from users (excerpts):
Suddenly, when I shut down or restart the computer, I started getting a message saying something like "Memory could not be written."
At first, we were unable to determine which program was causing the error, but the user managed to take a screenshot of the error screen and contacted us.
User-observed errors:
After shutdown, I get the explorer.exe application error: The instruction at 0x00007FF902763ACA referenced memory at 0x000000000000000024. The memory could not be written.
Click OK to exit the program.
According to users, the "explorer.exe - Application Error" screen appears and then immediately closes automatically.
There are various causes for the "explorer.exe - Application Error" and we have previously introduced the causes and solutions, but to identify the cause, you need to check each one one by one.

In addition to the above errors, the following issues have been reported:
- Some network cards stop working, making it impossible to connect to the Internet
- The taskbar becomes unresponsive (I've confirmed this myself)
- Explorer becomes unresponsive for a certain period of time (I have confirmed this myself)
- The overall system performance becomes slower than before (I have confirmed this myself)
If the taskbar becomes unresponsive, restarting File Explorer from Task Manager will make it responsive.
KB5034204 appears to have made major changes to Explorer, and the customizations we introduced the other day are no longer possible.

There is currently no information from Microsoft, so the only solution is to uninstall KB5034204.
If you have already installed KB5034204, you can leave it installed if it does not interfere with your work, but we recommend that you uninstall this update.
Also, KB5034204 is a preview release, so installation is not required.
*If you install the software and the tab function in Explorer is disabled, Explorer will not open, so if you have it disabled you will need to restore it.
