Win11 23H2 Start menu icons are transparent and have the name "ms-resource:App..."

After installing the update KB5048685 for Windows 11 version 23H2, some app icons in the Start menu become transparent and are renamed as "ms-resource:App...".

This time, I would like to introduce the specific symptoms and solutions to this problem.

It is unclear whether the cause is KB5048685 or the Microsoft Store app, but given the timing, we believe KB5048685 is the cause.

The two apps I checked were "Media Player" and "Paint."

Not only the icons pinned to the Start menu, but also the icons in "All (Apps)" are transparent and named "ms-resource:App..."

And this app is categorized under "Other".

If you drag and drop this "ms-resource:App..." onto your desktop to create a shortcut, the icon and name will be displayed correctly.

It also displays correctly when pinned to the taskbar, and can be launched correctly from the desktop shortcut, the start menu icon, or the taskbar icon.

How to fix the issue of transparent icons in the Start menu and the name "ms-resource:App..."

1. Open the Start menu, right-click the icon in question, and click "App Settings."

*If the icon is in "All apps," right-click the icon > "Details" > "App settings."

2. The app's advanced options will open, scroll down and select "Repair" and "Reset".

*After performing "Repair" and "Reset", only the name of the problematic app in the Start menu will be displayed correctly, but the icons and names in "All apps" will be displayed correctly.

3. Right-click on the problematic app in the Start menu > Click "Unpin from Start."

4. Right-click on the app in "All apps" > click "Pin to Start."

The app should now display correctly.
