This time, we will be looking at Windows 10 or Windows 11.Device managerto "UnknowndeviceHere's how to solve the problem when this message appears.
specific symptoms
In some environments running Windows 10 or Windows 11, "Other devices" is displayed in Device Manager, and when you open it, an "Unknown device" is displayed.
Even if you right-click on this "Unknown Device" and select "Update Driver," the driver cannot be found, and it cannot be found by Windows Update either.
This message also appears on my PC (Windows 10), and I am unable to update the driver, nor do I know what device it is.
Causes and Solutions
Cause
The most common reason for the "Unknown Device" message is a corrupted driver for your mobile device, or your motherboard is too old to recognize a new device.
It's probably something (a device) that you've connected to your PC before.
In cases like this where the cause is unknown, the easiest thing to do is to delete the "Unknown device" so that it no longer appears.
If the "Unknown device" message appears again after rebooting even after deleting the driver, it means that the problematic device is still connected.
Solution
Remove the driver
Right-click on "Unknown device" and click "Uninstall device."
A confirmation screen will appear, so click "Uninstall".
Then the "Unknown device" will no longer be displayed.
If "Unknown device" appears again after restarting
If the "Unknown device" appears again after restarting, it is likely that the device is still connected.
It is difficult to identify the device, so we may be able to identify it by installing the distributed drivers one by one, or by letting us know in the comments or via the contact form under which item the "Unknown Device" is displayed.
For example, in the image below, "Unknown Device" is displayed under "Other Devices."
If you have a manufacturer-made PC, the driver may be provided, so downloading and installing the driver should make the "Unknown device" disappear.
If you see "Unknown device" after a clean install of Windows 10/11, try installing the chipset driver first.
If you let us know your PC model number and OS version, we can look into it for you, so please feel free to comment.
