How to Create a Password Reset Disk for a Windows 10/Win11 Local Account

Have you ever forgotten the password for your Windows 10 or 11 local account and had to reset it?

If you create a password reset disk, you can easily reset your password if you forget it.

A password reset disk can be created on a USB flash drive (USB memory) or SD card.

[Important] This method is for local accounts only.:

Please note that the password reset disk explained in this article can only be used with a local account created on your PC. It cannot reset the password for a Microsoft account that you sign in with an email address.

Benefits of a Password Reset Disk

You can also create a password reset disk on a small USB flash drive.

The created file "userkey.psw" is only 2KB, so you don't need to worry about running out of space.

Additionally, the USB flash drive will not be formatted.

This means you can create a password reset disk using a USB flash drive that already has files on it.

However, to prevent data loss, we recommend that you back up the data on the USB flash drive before creating a password reset disk.

*An empty USB flash drive is also a good option.

How to create a password reset disk for a local account

A password reset disk can only be used with the local account for which it was created.

If you have other local accounts, you will need to create one for each account.

Beforehand, please connect the SD card or USB flash drive to your PC.

1. Press Windows Key + R to open Run, enter the following code and press Enter:

2. The Control Panel will open, so change the view to "Large icons" and click "User Accounts."

3. Click Create a password reset disk.

4. Click Next.

5. Make sure the connected drive is displayed under "Create a password key desk on the following drive" and click "Next".

6. Enter your password in "Current User Account Password" and click "Next".

7. When the progress reaches 100%, click Next.

8. Click "Finish" to complete the password reset disk creation.

What happens if I change my password after creating a password reset disk?

No matter how many times you change your password, the password information associated with the account you created is recorded on the disk, so you can always use that disk to reset your password.

In other words, once you create a password reset disk, as long as you keep that disk safe, you can rest assured even if you forget or change your password.

How to reset your password

1. Insert the password reset disk into your PC.

2. Enter your password and sign in.

3. You will then see the message "The password is incorrect. Please enter it again." Click OK.

4. "Reset Password" will be displayed below the password input box. Click it and follow the instructions on the screen.
