Add "7-zip (Extract and select folder)" to the right-click menu in Win10/11

Even if you extract a compressed file to a folder using 7-zip, the compressed file remains selected, making it difficult to find the extracted folder among a large number of files.

For example, if there are many files and folders, like the folder below, after extracting the compressed file (2.zip in the image), it can be a hassle to find the folder called "2."

So I created a tool called "7zip_ExpandAndSelect" that automatically selects the extracted folder after extracting it to a folder.

This feature is added to the right-click menu of compressed files.

Supported OS: Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11

Before using this tool, please install 7-zip (64-bit Windows x64).

If you do not have 7-zip installed, this tool will not work.

To avoid an issue where multiple windows would appear simultaneously when clicking "7-zip (extract and select folder)" with multiple compressed files selected, we have modified the program so that when multiple files are selected, the files are not extracted, and a message is displayed to safely exit.

Pre-installation preparation and installation method

Before installing "7zip_ExpandAndSelect", some preparation may be required.

1. Find and launch "7-Zip File Manager" from the Start menu.

2.7-zip will open, so click "Tools" > "Options" from the menu.

3. Once "Options" opens, select all with Ctrl + A and click the "+" button above the user account name.

Or click in the blank space to the right of any type under your user account name.

4. Once you have made your selection, click OK.

5. Exit 7-zip and install the tools.

6. Copy the downloaded "7zip_ExpandAndSelect_Inst.zip"Unzipand run "7zip_ExpandAndSelect_Inst.exe" inside.

7. When the "User Account Control" message appears, click "Yes".

8. "7zip_ExpandAndSelect Setup" will appear, so click "Install".

9. When the message "Installation complete" appears, click OK.

*The setup screen will close automatically.

How To Use

If you right-click on the compressed file, a menu called "7-zip (Extract and select folder)" will appear. Clicking this will create a folder with the same name as the compressed file and the file will be extracted into it.

Once the files are extracted, the folder will be selected automatically.

If you extract to the desktop or a special folder, a new window (Explorer) will open to select the folder. This is a Windows specification.

Special folders include Quick Access in File Explorer, personal folders in This PC, etc. If you extract to a folder opened through these folders, a new window will open with the folder selected.

In the new right-click menu in Windows 11, clicking "See more options" will display "7-zip (Extract and select folder)."

You can easily restore the old right-click menu by using the tool introduced on the next page.

How to uninstall

1. If you want to uninstall the tool, run "7zip_ExpandAndSelect_Inst.exe".

2. If the software is already installed, the button will say "Uninstall." Click it to uninstall it.

3. When the message "Uninstallation is complete. Thank you for using the software" appears, click OK.
