When a PC is turned on, the first firmware that starts up is the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) installed on the motherboard.

Then, the BIOS/UEFI performs a self-test (POST) to check if the PC's major hardware components are working properly.
