This time, we will show you what to do if your touchpad stops working properly after updating to Windows 11 version 24H2.
24H2 has a variety of issues, but it appears that in a very small number of environments there is an issue that causes the touchpad to stop working properly.
For example, right-clicking may stop responding or may perform a different action.
Causes and solutions for when some touchpad functions stop working
1. Corrupted drivers
The Windows 11 update may have corrupted the touchpad driver.
When you perform an update, various system files, including the touchpad, may be corrupted.
To repair a driver, you can download and install it from your PC manufacturer's website, but in some cases the manufacturer may not provide the driver. Here we will show you how to reinstall the driver.
1. Click the bottom left (center) of the screen.Start buttonRight-click > Device Manager.
2. Once Device Manager opens, click the ">" to the left of "Mice and other pointing devices (touchpad)."
3. Then, mouse and pointing devices (the name will vary depending on your environment) will be displayed, so right-click on the touchpad device and click "Uninstall device".
*In the image below, "Synaptics SMBus TouchPad" is the touchpad device.
4. The "Uninstall device" warning screen will appear, so click "Uninstall".
*Do not check "Tried to remove the driver for this device."
5. If you have a mouse connected, restart your PC from the Start button.
When your PC starts up, the touchpad driver will be installed automatically. Check to see if the touchpad is now working properly.
If you don't have a mouse:
If you don't have a mouse, uninstalling the driver will temporarily disable the touchpad.
1. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on your keyboard at the same time.
2. The following screen will appear, so press the Tab key several times to select the power icon in the lower right corner.
3. When the following screen appears, the power button is selected, so press Enter.
4. When "Shutdown" or "Restart" is displayed, press ↓ on your keyboard to select "Restart", then press Enter to restart your PC.
When your PC starts up, the touchpad driver will be installed automatically. Check to see if the touchpad is now working properly.
2. Touchpad Settings
Depending on your PC, you may be able to configure what happens when you click the touchpad.
The settings may have been changed during the Windows 11 update, so please check them.
1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
2. Click "Bluetooth and Devices" on the left, then scroll down on the right and click "Touchpad."
3. Click "More touchpad settings."
4. For example, as shown in the image below, there should be an item called "Device Settings" on the far right. Select it and then click the "Settings" button.
*The display may vary depending on the environment.
5. If a button to restore settings to default is displayed, click it.
*This is the "Device Settings" screen of the author's PC, so the display may differ depending on the PC you are using.
6. When the confirmation screen appears, click OK.
7. Finally, click the "Apply" button.
At this point, the problem may be resolved, so please check.
Once you have confirmed this, you can close "Mouse Properties" and "Device Settings".
3. If reinstalling the driver or reviewing the settings does not resolve the issue
If reinstalling the driver or reviewing the settings does not resolve the issue, there may be a compatibility issue between the touchpad driver and Windows 11 version 24H2.
In Windows 11 version 24H2, some problematic drivers are blocked to resolve vulnerability issues.
This may be the cause of the issue, so the following steps may solve the issue, albeit only temporarily:
1. Click the bottom left (center) of the screen.Start buttonRight-click > Device Manager.
2. Once Device Manager opens, click the ">" to the left of "Mice and other pointing devices (touchpad)."
3. Then, mouse and pointing devices (the name will vary depending on the environment) will be displayed, so right-click on the touchpad device and click "Update driver".
*In the image below, "Synaptics SMBus TouchPad" is the touchpad device.
4.The "How do you want to search for drivers" screen will be displayed. Click "Browse my computer for drivers."
5. When the message "Browse for drivers on your computer" appears, click "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer."
6. You will be prompted with "Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware." Select "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse" and click "Next."
7. When the message "Driver updated successfully" appears, click the "Close" button to exit.
8. The "System Settings Change" screen will appear, asking "Do you want to restart your computer now?" Click "Yes" to restart the computer.
Once your PC boots, check if the issue is resolved.
*After making this setting, the "Device Settings" item in "Mouse Properties" will no longer be displayed.
If you want to revert, select the original driver in step 6 above.
Restoring the mouse may take longer than if you selected "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse," so please do not force quit the process midway just because it is slow.
