What to do if folder icons in Win11 have black borders

This time, we will introduce how to deal with the situation where the surrounding area becomes black when you make the folder icon display in Windows 11 Explorer larger than the "medium icon" size.

This issue can be fixed by pressing the F5 key once, which will return the image to normal display (depending on the size), but if you change the size the edges will turn black again.

*This does not occur in empty folders.

This is probably due to a bug in Windows 11 Explorer itself.

What to do if folder icons have a black border around them

1. Right-click on the folder with a black border and click "Properties."

2. Once the properties are displayed, open the "Customization" tab and change the "Folder Type" from "General" to "Documents."

*Although we are using "General" here, the folder type may not be "General".

3. After changing it to "Document", click "Apply" in the bottom right.

This will fix the issue of folder icons having black borders.

If the problem persists, try changing the folder to a different type, then closing the properties and changing it back to the original type.

After some testing, I found that the problem was caused by displaying thumbnails of files.

フォルダーオプションIf "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is checked in the "View" tab of the Windows 10 operating system, the icons of the files inside the folders will be displayed above the folders. If you uncheck this, the icons will not be displayed above the folders and the problem will not occur.

The above steps may sometimes solve the problem completely, and sometimes only temporarily, but if you create a new file in the folder or delete a file, the folder icon may become black when you resize it again.

This issue can be temporarily resolved by deleting the thumbnail cache, but the root cause is in File Explorer.

At this point, it appears the only way to fully resolve this issue is to wait for a fix from Microsoft.
