A tool to instantly sleep, restart, and shut down Windows 10/11 using Win + Y

"It's a hassle to have to go to the Start menu and select Sleep when I'm just leaving my desk for a bit..." "I want to restart my computer quickly, but there are so many things to click that it's inconvenient..."

If you're using Windows 10 or Windows 11, have you ever felt this way?

Windows does not come standard with convenient shortcut keys that allow you to sleep, restart, or shut down in one go.

Especially for those who frequently use the sleep function, this extra step can become a small daily stress.

So this time, "Windows key + YI created a tool called "OneShotSleep" that allows you to instantly put your computer to sleep, restart, or shut it down by simply pressing "."

Why doesn't Windows have shortcuts?

Windows 10 and 11 have many useful shortcut keys, such as "Win + Shift + S" to take a screenshot and "Win + E" to open File Explorer.

However, for some reason, there is no single shortcut key for basic operations such as "sleep," "restart," and "shutdown."

There are several possible reasons for this:

  • Preventing erroneous operation
    • Power operations are important operations that directly affect the operation of a PC. If you set shortcut keys carelessly, there is a risk that unintentional sleep or shutdown will occur, resulting in the loss of data you were working on. For this reason, it is thought that by taking a certain number of steps, the user is asked to confirm their intention to perform the operation.
  • Keyboard design concept
    • Shortcut keys are combinations of specific keys on the keyboard. Many functions are assigned when combined with the Windows key, but since sleep, restart, and shutdown are important functions related to shutting down Windows, they may have been designed more carefully to prevent accidental pressing.

For this reason, Windows prioritizes security and stability and does not currently provide clear shortcut keys for power operations.

The benefits of OneShotSleep for PC operation

The "OneShotSleep" we created this time brings the following efficiency to PC operation:

1. Sleep, restart, and shutdown can now be performed efficiently

The biggest advantage is thatImproved operational efficiencyPreviously, this required multiple steps: moving the mouse to open the Start menu, clicking the power icon, and then selecting the desired option.

This tool allows you to keep your fingers on the keyboard andWindows key + YSimply press " to instantly put your computer to sleep or shut it down.

This will significantly improve work efficiency, especially for those who frequently turn on and off their PCs.

2. Three action options: Sleep, Restart, Shutdown

This tool not only lets you sleep,Rebootshut downYou can freely choose which action to assign to "Windows key + Y" from the tool's settings screen.

Choose and set the action that best suits your PC usage.

3. You can also set whether or not to display a confirmation dialog.

This tool allows you to configure whether to display a confirmation dialog when restarting or shutting down, depending on your preference.

  • Show confirmation dialog (default)
    • Recommended for those who want to thoroughly avoid operating the device incorrectly and are cautious.
  • Do not display confirmation dialog
    • Recommended for those looking for efficient operation.

The confirmation dialog only has two options: "Yes (Y)" or "No (N)." If you choose "Yes (Y)," you don't need to move your finger after pressing "Windows key + Y"; you can just press "Y" again, which I think is very easy to use.

4. Compatible with both Windows 10 and 11

This tool has been tested on both Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11.

Why I chose "Windows Key + Y" as my shortcut

The reason why I chose "Windows key + Y" as the shortcut key for the tool I created this time is mainly for the following reasons.

1. To avoid overlapping with existing Windows shortcuts

There are a huge number of shortcut keys in Windows.Finding frequently used shortcuts and unique key combinationswas important.

For example, we had to avoid keys that many users use on a daily basis, such as "Windows key + D" (to show/hide the desktop) and "Windows key + E" (to launch File Explorer).

As a result of our investigation, we found that "Windows key + Y" is a relatively common shortcut that has few standard Windows functions and many common applications assigned to it.Unused combinationsWe were able to confirm that this is the case.

This minimizes the risk of user confusion with existing operations.

2. The layout is easy to operate with one hand

The "Windows key" is usually located at the bottom left of the keyboard, and the "Y" key is relatively close to the center,Positioning for easy one-handed operationWe also took into consideration the fact that

For example, if you want to use one hand to operate the mouse while using the other hand to quickly execute a shortcut, a position that allows your fingers to reach it comfortably increases convenience.

In particular, to meet the need for quickly executing the frequently used sleep function, an intuitive and easy-to-press key combination was required.

3. Windows Mixed Reality usage and future prospects

Windows Mixed Reality requires specific hardware, so it's not widely used by the general Windows user population.

Microsoft's policy also suggests that support for Windows Mixed Reality may be reduced or discontinued in the future.

Windows Mixed Reality devices are not supported on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.

Considering this situation, we decided that selecting "Windows key + Y" as a shortcut key that is less likely to cause conflicts in the future would be more convenient for many users.

  • I will use it.
On my Spring 2011 laptop environment, a "USB device recognition error" occurred on 2025-03-03.

It's not clear, but I believe the following is the cause:

The problem is that "the mouse moves, but the left and right clicks and return don't work."
I had no choice but to shut it down by cutting off the power. This problem recurred bit by bit for about a month, but it stopped happening around 25-04.
However, considering the possibility of a recurrence, I don't want to have to frequently shut off the power, so I decided to use "OneShotSleep". Better safe than sorry.
    Thank you

    • Thank you for your comment, Nombe Ana.

      I'm glad "OneShotSleep" was helpful.
Microsoft has made several USB-related fixes, so I think there is a possibility that this problem will occur in the future.
