Should I update from Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2?

Without any prior notice, Microsoft recently (October 1, 2024) released Windows 11 version 24H2 (Windows 11 2024 Update) to the general public.

24H2 isWindows Update This will be rolled out gradually over the next few weeks in environments where "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" is set to "On" on the "Updates" screen.

It is unclear whether updates will occur automatically, but I personally recommend setting "Get the latest updates as soon as they become available" to "Off."

This is because if the update is performed automatically, there is a possibility that a known issue that has not yet been resolved may occur.

However, Microsoft automatically identifies environments where problems may occur and prevents deployment.

However, based on my experience, I believe that this "automatic detection" cannot be guaranteed to be 100% accurate.

Known issues:

  • The Safe Exam Browser application may not open.
After installing Windows 11 version 24H2, you will experience issues opening the Safe Exam Browser app if you are running version 3.7 or lower of this application.
    >Unresolved
  • Some devices using Easy Anti-Cheat stop responding and display a blue screen.
Microsoft is working with Easy Anti-Cheat to address an incompatibility issue between Windows 11 version 24H2 and the Easy Anti-Cheat application. This software is automatically installed by some games as part of security and anti-cheat measures used in multiplayer online PC games. Only devices with Intel's Alder Lake+ processors and the vPro platform are affected. In rare cases, this issue can cause affected devices to become unresponsive and display a blue screen with the error "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" when users open or play certain games. Most devices experiencing this issue use Easy Anti-Cheat drivers released before April 2024.
    > Solution: Updating your game may help resolve this issue, depending on whether a compatible version of Easy Anti-Cheat is included in the game update.
  • After the device is locked, you may experience issues with the fingerprint sensor.
After installing Windows 11 version 24H2, certain devices may experience issues with the fingerprint sensor. On these devices, the sensor may become unresponsive after locking the device. This issue prevents Windows Hello fingerprint authentication from working, and users must use another method to unlock or log in to the device.
Solution: Installing the latest firmware on your device may resolve the compatibility issue. We expect this issue will be resolved as new versions and updates are released for the affected device models.
  • Wallpaper customization applications may not work as expected.
After installing Windows 11 version 24H2, some wallpaper customization applications might not start or function correctly. Multiple applications might be affected, and symptoms might include wallpaper not displaying correctly, icons disappearing from the desktop, loss of desktop preview functionality, issues with virtual desktops, and application error messages.
Solution: Installing the latest versions of these wallpaper customization applications may resolve compatibility issues on affected devices. We expect these issues will be resolved as new versions and updates of these applications are released by their respective developers.
  • Compatibility issue with Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers Windows 11 version 24H2 devices with affected Intel SST drivers may experience a blue screen error.
Intel and Microsoft have discovered an incompatibility issue with certain versions of the Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) driver on Intel 11th Generation Core processors and Windows 11 version 24H2. Devices running version 24H2 with the affected Intel SST driver may experience a blue screen error. The affected driver is named Intel® Smart Sound Technology (Intel® SST) Audio Controller. It is listed under System Devices in Device Manager and has the file name 'IntcAudioBus.sys'. Versions of this file that are 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152 may experience this issue.
Solution: Devices experiencing this issue must install a new version of the Intel® SST Audio Controller driver before updating to Windows 11 version 24H2. This issue is resolved by updating the Intel® Smart Sound Technology driver to version 10.30.00.5714 or later, or 10.29.00.5714 or later.
  • Asphalt 8 may stop responding periodically.
After installing Windows 11 version 24H2, you may experience issues with Asphalt 8 (Airborne). The game may stop responding with an exception while using or exiting, and you may need to restart the game to recover from the exception.

Therefore, even if it does not appear on the Windows Update screen, you can still update it manually.

However, Microsoft currently recommends not manually updating in environments where the above issues may occur.

Some users may find the new features attractive and want to update immediately, but since bugs have been occurring since the release, we recommend waiting at least a month for the update to work.

In my environment, I have not updated to the newly released 24H2, but I plan to update it soon to verify it.

If I find any more information, I'll post a new article.

Win11 24H2 Internet connection issues resolved with KB5046617

2024 / 12 / 04:

Today, many environments that have the "Get the latest updates as soon as they become available" option turned off are receiving the notification "Windows 11, version 24H2 is available."

Version 24H2 still has some unresolved issues, but the most critical bugs have already been fixed.

I think Microsoft is rolling out the updates in stages, starting with environments where they have determined that installing version 24H2 will not cause any major problems.

If you do update, be sure to back up all important files before updating.

Please note that if you have a third-party UI customization app installed (such as "ExplorerPatcher" or "StartAllBack"), be sure to uninstall it before updating to version 24H2.

If you update without uninstalling a third-party UI customization app, you may encounter a fatal error after the update, where the screen is completely black and only the mouse is visible. This is because Microsoft has discouraged third-party UI customization apps.

To avoid panicking if your PC suddenly breaks down, it's a good idea to have a standard backup software to protect your important photos and data.

    • Dear Siden,

It seems that they are currently halting the rollout to environments where the issue may occur. I think they will gradually roll it out to environments where the issue will not occur.

    • Thank you for your comment, Siden.
That's right. The problem is occurring in only a few environments, so I think there's no problem updating in environments other than those where the known problem occurs and where the solution has been implemented.
