Win11 KB5036893 issues: Mouse cursor shaking, etc.

Microsoft released security update KB5036893 on April 9, 2024, bringing the new features of Moment 5 to all versions of Windows 11.

In addition, more than 100 vulnerabilities have been fixed based on CVE numbers, including a vulnerability that could allow the security function of Secure Boot to be bypassed.

However, it seems that some issues have occurred in some environments where KB5036893 has been installed.

  • Can't wake from sleep
  • Mouse cursor shakes or moves on its own when waking up from sleep
  • Opening files and folders is extremely slow
  • The desktop is unresponsive, but the Start menu opens. However, restarting and shutting down are unresponsive.
  • Apps on the taskbar are unresponsive
  • WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) cannot be started
  • Blue screenis displayed.
  • After installing KB5036893, the sign-in screen does not appear and I cannot proceed.

Also, in some environments, the update fails with the 0x800705b9 error.

I also confirmed in my environment that the mouse cursor would shake and move on its own when waking up from sleep.

However, it seems that this issue has been around since KB5035942, which was preview released before KB5036893, and not since KB5036893.

This was fixed by unplugging the mouse from the PC and plugging it back in.

If you are experiencing issues with File Explorer (files, folders, taskbar, desktop) or a blue screen, this may be due to compatibility issues between Windows 11 and third-party applications (including drivers).

If you are planning to update, first check the update information for the applications you are currently using (especially those that make changes to the system).

If the sign-in screen does not appear and you cannot proceed, shut down the computer (if this does not work, press and hold the power button to force it to shut down), then start the computer up with the network disconnected; the screen may then appear.
