Issue with not being able to view or save passwords in Chrome and Edge

For the past few days, some users of Chrome and Edge on Windows have been experiencing issues with the Password Manager not working properly, with passwords not being found or saved.

Starting on July 25, 2024, for approximately 17 hours, in many environments, passwords were no longer displayed in the Chrome Browser password manager, and it appeared as if all passwords had disappeared.

And it didn't even let me save my password.

Google explains that the root cause of the issue is a change in product behavior without adequate functional protection.

説明:

For 17 hours and 51 minutes, many users were unable to find or save passwords in the Chrome browser's password manager.

Preliminary analysis determined that the root cause of this issue was a change in product behavior without proper functional protection. Google engineers have mitigated the issue by deploying a fix.

Customer impact:

Affected users were unable to find their passwords in Chrome's password manager. Users could save passwords but they were not visible. The impact was limited to the M127 version of the Chrome browser on the Windows platform.

Of the 25% of the total user base to which the configuration change was deployed, approximately 2% of users experienced this issue.

Furthermore, this issue appears to be occurring not only in Chrome but also in Edge.

Microsoft Edge is based on Chromium, so it is likely that the same issue occurs.

The lack of information about Microsoft Edge is likely due to the fact that fewer users use it than Chrome.

I'm sure you were very worried, but Google said that your passwords were not lost, but that they were no longer accessible, so you can probably feel relieved in that regard.

This issue has now been fixed, and if the issue persists, you can restart Chrome to access your passwords.

You can restart Chrome or Edge by closing and reopening the browser, but I recommend the following URL:

For Chrome:

chrome://restart
Chrome address bar
Chrome address bar

For Edge:

edge://restart
Edge address bar
Edge address bar

Enter the above URL into your browser's address bar and press Enter to restart your browser while keeping all tabs open.

*If the message "Do you want to close all tabs?" appears, click "Close All." Tabs will be restored after restarting.

Addendum: What to do if restarting does not improve the situation

Solution 1

If the above steps don't fix the issue, you may not have received the update.

1. Enter the following URL into the address bar of your browser and press Enter:

For Chrome:

edge://settings/help

For Edge:

edge://settings/help

2.The app will then automatically check for updates, so please wait a while.

3. If there is an update, it will be updated automatically and you will be asked to restart your browser.

If there are no updates, just enter the reboot URL above into the address bar and press Enter.

Check to see if you can see the password.

Solution 2

If that doesn't solve the problem, try signing out of your browser (if sync is enabled).

For Chrome

1. Enter the following URL in the address bar and press Enter:

chrome://settings/people

2. Click "Turn Off" in Google Settings.
