Are you tired of having to enter your Microsoft account password every time you start your PC?
Setting up automatic sign-in can help you avoid these hassles and get you started on your PC more smoothly.
This article explains how to set up automatic sign-in to your Microsoft account in Windows 11.
However, this increased convenience comes with security considerations, which we will explain in more detail below.
Things to check before setting up automatic sign-in
Automatic sign-in is very convenient, but there are a few important things you should know before setting it up.
It is especially important to have a thorough understanding of the security aspects.
Understanding Security Risks
Enabling automatic sign-in means you won't need to enter your password when you start your PC, making it easier for someone else to access your PC.
Security risks are particularly high when using shared PCs or laptops that are at risk of being stolen or lost.
When setting up automatic sign-in, please carefully consider your own usage environment and security requirements.
Disable Windows Hello sign-in
If you're using a Microsoft account and have Windows Hello (PIN, Face ID, Fingerprint ID, etc.) enabled, you might not see the option to set up automatic sign-in.
This is because Windows Hello provides greater security and may conflict with automatic sign-in. You must disable Windows Hello sign-in using the following steps:
1. Press Windows Key + R to open Run, type the following command and press Enter:
ms-settings:signinoptions
2. Open "Settings" > "Accounts" > "Sign-in options". Scroll down and click "For increased security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device (recommended)" to "Off."
If it's grayed out and you can't turn it off, try adding another sign-in method, such as a PIN, and then try again.
How to set up automatic sign-in to your Microsoft account in Windows 11
1. Press Windows Key + R to open Run, type the following command and press Enter:
netplwiz
2. "User Accounts" will open, so select the username of the Microsoft account for which you want to set up automatic sign-in.
3. Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."

4. Click "Apply" and the "Automatic Sign-in" screen will appear. Enter your password and confirm the password and click OK.
The password is not a PIN. Enter the password for the Microsoft account you selected.
Even if you enter an incorrect password here, the "Auto Sign-in" screen will close without displaying any error.
Automatic sign-in will not work with an incorrect password, so we recommend that you check whether the password is correct by typing it into a notepad or similar, then copying and pasting it.
5. The "Automatically sign in" screen will then close automatically, so click OK on the "User Accounts" screen.
This completes the automatic sign-in setup for your Microsoft account in Windows 11.
Restart your PC and check if you are automatically signed in without being prompted for a password.
If I enter the wrong password on the "Automatic Sign-in" screen, will I be unable to sign in?
Even if you enter the wrong password on the "Automatic Sign-in" screen, you will still be able to sign in.
If you enter an incorrect password, the message "Your username or password is incorrect. Please try again." will be displayed on the sign-in screen.
When you click OK, a screen for entering your username and password will appear, but if you look at the bottom left, you will see two identical account names.
The currently selected username is the one without an image for the account below, so please select the account name above.
This will take you to the usual sign-in screen, where you can sign in by entering your PIN or other information.
Re-enter the correct password
Once you've signed in, open the "User Accounts" screen, check "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer," and click "Apply."
This will clear the incorrect password.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" again and click "Apply."
When the "Auto Sign-in" screen appears, enter the correct password.
